English question, please help.?

Mr Newman has sent his condolences to the boy's family.

condolence here, does it mean in a letter, or does it just mean expressing his sadness to the family?

Since Mr. Newman SENT his condolences, this means he wrote a card, note or letter (hopefully NOT an email!) or even sent a telegram to the boy's family. If he GAVE his condolences that could mean he actually telephoned or spoke to them in person...or posted something to them.

Well because you can't really send your feelings to a person telepathically I'm assuming it means a letter also it said "sent"

It could mean either, though I suspect the latter.

Expressing his sympathies, it does not matter how he " sent " them as other users are stating, sending condolences means expressing sympathies regardless of how he sent them. why even bring up how he sent them as one user did below...
