1. When we prepare 1 dm3 of standard solution, the solute is dissolved in water and the solution is made up to 1 dm3 in a volumetric flask. Why is the solute not simply dissolved in 1 dm3 of pure water?

2. Give three properties of a substance that can be taken as primary standard.

This is because the volume of the final solution is unknown, as the final NOT 1dm³ when the solute is dissolved in 1 dm³ of water. In other words, the concentration of thesolution CANNOT be determined.

(1) The substance should be pure.
(2) The substance should NOT react with atmospheric oxygen.
(3) The substance should NOT absorb atmospheric moisture.
(other) The substance should be commercially available and the price should becheap.
