The Brits turned over Hong Kong when the lease ran out outside of Hong Kong in the New Territory

Perhaps the Chinese might wonder about this since Hong Kong is theirs not British. It hasn't been under British control since 1997.

why not hong kongers elect their own governor?
UK will never appoint governors to hk since it doesn't have the right and it's not democratic to do so.
