How do i keep my Email address when changing PC?

In the past whenever I have upgraded my PC I have always had to make a new email address. I desperately need to upgrade now, but I can't afford to change my email address again.
I would also like to keep the emails I already have.
What would be the easy way to go about this. Thanks.

Hi Stephen,

What's been said is true; there is no need to change your email address when changing computers. Before disposing of your old computer, I would destroy the data you've stored on there (after you're sure you don't need anything from it post-upgrade that is).

You don't mention what mail application you use, but, it should have an option to export mails. Usually, every mail folder you create, is stored as a separate store on your hard disk. So, if you had an inbox and three other mail folders, you would have to export each one in turn. Once you've got your new computer running, you'll have to install the mail application again andimport all the folders you exported. Depending on how you've setup your inbox for retrieval of new emails, after you've imported all the folders, you will have to tell the email program about your email address you've need using ( you do not have to create a new one). Once done, the email program will find and download all emails waiting for you. This may mean you have duplicate emails in your inbox, but easily dealt-with.

Remember to destroy all personal data off your old computer before disposing of it. I hope this makes the process you're about to embark on easier to understand. Even if you need professional help, the above will put you in a position to monitor what the professional does.

I wish you well!!

Regards,
Mike

Why would you need to change your email address just because you change your PC?

Absolutely no need for it. I have had my primary email address for over 15 years!

Either your using a Web based one or the one provided by your ISP.

With the new PC, after you have set up the internet provided by your ISP
then log into your old email account as normal

You just need to put exactly the same account settings in whatever email program you use when you install it on the new machine.

I've used the same email address for something like 15 years over countless computers, it's the normal thing to do.

On the old machine, the email program should have an option to export the stored email.
You save that to a file, then import it on the new setup after initially configuring email.

Exactly how you do the settings and transfer depends on what program you use for email (I use MS Outlook, from MS Office of whatever version is current).

If you need more info, post another question giving details of what email program you are using, and what operating systems the old and new PCs have.

(If you are using some form of web mail system, nothing is stored on your PC - you just log in via any web browser and carry on using it, just the same.)

There is NO REASON why you have to change email address when you move to a new computer.

The new computer will have an Email program on it. Most likely Windows Live Mail.

You just open Windows Live Mail and put in a NEW ACCOUNT with your existing Email address and password.

Email address like Yahoo or Gmail or Hotmail do not require any special programs. Just open a Web browser an log on to the site.
