A boat takes 3 hours to reach a destination 48km apart when it goes downstream and takes 4 hours for the return journey. What is the speed of th boat? What is the speed of the water current?

Let b km/h be the speed of the boat, and w km/h be that ofthe water current.3(b + w) = 48 ...... [1]
4(b - w) = 48 ...... [2]
From [1] :
b + w = 16 ...... [3]
From [2] :
b - w = 12 ...... [4]
[3] + [4] :
2b = 28
b = 14
[3] - [4] :
2w = 4
w = 2
The speed of the boat = 14 km/h
The speed of the water current = 2 km/h

4y = 48 - (2)
And then you can use the method of elimination or graphical method or the method of substitution to solve it
