Chopin wrote his 24 Etudes Op. 10 and Op. 25, between 1828 and 1836, when he was eighteen to twentysix years old. He considered the standard books of excises by Czerny and Cramer to be outdated, and under the influence of Paganini he strove to attain a fusion of bravura and poetic expression. His Etudes extend the range of piano music to the extreme limits of tonality, revolutionize finger technique by means of new usages, and combine technical problem with profound musical meaning in an incomparable manner. Etudes are studies addressing particular technical problems of piano playing. While fulfilling an educational purpose, they possess all the freedom of romantic piano music.
Etudes Op35, No. 12 is one of Chopin’s stormiest and most impassioned compositions, and the rigid structure should not prevent one from playing it so. This Etude with its swirling "arpeggios" is like a mighty sea whipped into mountainous waves, perhaps that is why it is called “ocean”. One may say that the “ocean” represents life's many turbulent ups and downs culminating in a triumphant end.
