　　澳洲大陸是世界上最乾燥的大陸，澳大利亞的飲用水主要是靠自然降水等其他方式。政府嚴禁使用地下水資源，因為經過調查得知，地下水資源一旦被開採，很難恢復。澳洲供水主要是靠大壩的蓄水。自2006年受厄爾尼諾現象的影響，澳洲大陸降雨大幅減少，各大城市普遍出現缺水現象，各個城市紛紛頒佈了很多限制用水的條例和法規，以期通過節水渡過乾旱。
