如果John早已被給一些選擇，比如説，Tom: Which track events do you take part in ? (限定選擇一定是競賽）
or
Tom: Which of the following： races, jumping, shot put, javelin and relay races
do you take part in ?（限定選擇是以下幾項）
就用which
但若Tom只是漫無目的或隨意問問
Tom： What events do you take part in? What should be used instead

The model answer:What are the events you take part in?
John: The event I take part in are .100 meter race....................
Basically both answers are correct and your answer is more appropriate grammarwise.

"what" is determiner,pronoun used when asking questions about kinds of things eg:-race,shot-put, or long jump.
"which" is determiner, pronoun used to ask or state what people or things you mean when a choice has to be made:-eg:- Which of these 3 games is yours?---race,shot-put, or long jump?Choice one.
