"How are you" is used as a casual greeting when you meet somebody.You can actually reply something with no standard answer.The usual reply is:-I'm fine,thank you. Or I'm Okay. How about you? Mustn't Grumble ; Can't Complaint ; Good. What have you been up to? etc.
