What do you think would be believable?

If my character finds a weapon he thinks might have been used to kill someone, should he take it before the possible murderer has a chance to dispose of it or should he just leave it where he found it and then call the police?

Call the police and follow their instructions. I'd stay there and wait for the police to show up, staying on the phone is safe because there's "someone with you" and if you see anyone you can relay that information to the dispatcher, further helping the case. Hopefully you can at least get in a good description before the crazy guy stabs you to death and then they have audio recording and more proof for the trial.Seriously though, he'd call the police. Taking it is tampering with evidence and not helping.

take a picture, leave it, call police, stay around(sit at the bus stop or shops or what ever) and pretend not knowing anything (in case the murderer came back), be the witness for police when they arrived.

Call the police. If he takes it, he will be putting himself in unwanted situations.
