Great Ocean Road......?

This is probably a question for sheila....

I posted a question a few months ago regarding my goal of doing the Great Ocean Road trip. It looks so beautiful. Anyway, I procrastinate, I'm going to do it, then I can't afford to do it etc., etc., etc.

So one of my new years resolutions is that I am going to do it THIS year. So my question is, what is the best months to do this trip as far as weather is concerned. I live in Sydney, have never been to Melbourne and I know the weather there is as crazy as it is in Sydney sometimes. I want to drive the trip comfortably, just nice beautiful weather - not too hot, not too cold. So what would you suggest the best months are to do this.?? Im thinking May - June before it gets into winter OR Sept - Oct before it gets too hot.

Janelle, I would recommend you come down sometime during March or April. Our weather is usually glorious in autumn - warm, dry and calm. Towns along the Great Ocean Road are "off the richter" during summer and get a bit more peaceful from March onwards. Accommodation is often a bit cheaper in the off-season too. But once May and June arrive, many businesses close as there aren't enough customers to sustain them.

Of course, it's a beautiful coastline at any time of year and there are things to be said for coming down in winter - open fires, windswept beaches, a pot of soup on the stove. And accommodation rates are definitely cheaper then!

Janelle, I am not going to jump on Sheila's moment of glory, or anyone else. What I am going to say to you, is if you got something in mind to do, do it, don't sit there and dream about it.

I said I was going on an outback camping tour of the Kimberlies, and that is what I did, from thought to execution took me just a little over a week.

I said I wanted to dive on the reef, who would have thought I would do that, and pick a ripe mango each morning up north and have with breakfast. From thought to execution, was three weeks, the commissioner delayed my leave.

In other words Janelle, doesn't matter what month you pick, don't let trivialities steal your dream.

It is a great experience,we went in early January a few years ago and loved every moment of it despite temperature, bushfires & crowds in tourist spots. My favourite spot of all was Port Fairy.I guess we were fortunate to get there on a market day.We wandered around, had the best sausage sangers ever made,Bought hand crafted goods from the stalls,a ride on a launch out around the bay and met many locals all of whom were very friendly. There is so much to see along the way and much to do.We traveled in a Winnebago so had the option of choosing where we stopped & for how long.We ended our trip in the Barossa valley where we visited wineries & the delightful town of Hahndorf.Go for it Janelle, you won't be sorry.

One aspect of the Great Ocean Road to consider is that at different times of the year, humpback whales, southern right whales and blue whales can be viewed from the coast or by taking a boat trip to see them. If you want to go whale watching as well as taking in the remarkable sights along the road, Google is your friend for information.

The weather is generally more stable from December - March. January and February will be almost completely cloudless but you could get some very, very hot days. I'd say go in February or March, but I guess just check the weather a week in advance and try and plan a trip down when the temperature is going to be more comfortable. November is also a lovely time to come down as it's mild-warm and everything is green and fresh.

It's usually a lot colder down there. It's not always warm even in summer. I'd suggest March.
