Is it ok to write a story as you go along?

I know certain things that I want to happen and maybe the basic plot, but that's about it? What should I have figured out beforehand?

There are three kinds of writers: Plotters, Pantsers, and those in-between.

Plotters plot the entire thing ahead of time all the way through.

Pantsers have an idea and start by the seat of their pants. They're able to let the story go whichever way it goes. (I don't know how they do it, but I've met some published authors who do that.)

In-between sounds like you.

There is only one way to write a story--however it works for you. Don't let anyone try to tell you that you have to do it any particular way. ;)

There is no right answer to this. Do whatever you find works best for you.

Some writers plan everything in advance, down to what colour socks the characters are going to wear each day. Some (claim to) make everything up as they go along, and then edit it to make it into some sort of coherent whole that looks as though they planned it all. Most are somewhere in between.

As you write, you'll learn what you need to figure out in advance and what you ended up not needing, which should help you to do the right amount of planning for your next story.

The best kind of writing is rewriting, so going back and editing, adding new things into the story, changing the story as time goes a long is the best way to write. Creativity comes in many ways! Edit edit edit!

in case you are able to write that way, particular. yet without preplanned tale arc, you're possibly to land up with an inconsistent patchwork of innovations. it will desire some extreme modifying and revision by utilising the time you're finished with the preliminary draft.

Many writers simply write. It is actually how I get many of my favorite stories!! If you write like this, you have to be aware that you will have to re-write the story once you have the plot figured out. :) Still, it is a ton of fun to watch as the story unfolds before you while you are coming up with things on the spot. :3 Good luck, have fun, and write on!!

if it is for your own fun and writing training, go ahead!
when having a story, basically you should have a plot, or the flow of the story, the details of the character, and the setting of the background.

writing is a time taking process, after a few months writing it, when you looked back, those writing will seem a lot not mature, and you will then go back to the first line of your story, and start to fix and perfect your writing...

so go for it! Wish you ALL THE BEST!!

I usually just fix my mind on the characters and their personalities, and write whatever pops into my mind. And right before i write it i just think, based on their personality, would the character do that. Also I faintly imagine a plot, point of the story, and then just go with the flow :) everyone has their own style of writing, so it's probably the best if your just create an enviroment in which your comfortable in and then go with the flow

I usually have a basic idea of where I want the story to go. I end up discovering the characters as I write and sometimes they take the story in a different direction. Once you have the story, then you go back and edit and cleanup everything. Just have fun!
