You've got it backwards.
In the history of theology 'GOD' as opposed to 'Gods' is the relatively new idea.

Behold these religious freaks who continue to force their beliefs onto the innocent.

Gods were first "invented" as such by the ancient cultures, namely the ancient greeks and egyptians. The egyptians had many different gods for different things such as health, wealth and happiness. They also worshipped cats. Because cats are awesome.

Anyway, the greeks had the better known gods like Zeus and Athena (I'm sure you've heard of them). These also had special powers; Zeus was the king, the leader of the gods, Athena was his wife the goddess of war. There was Apollo and Hermes. If you've watched Hercules, you'll know all about it.

As for your second questions, the number of gods depends on your religion. I personally don't understand why we haven't kept the Greek gods. I think they're awesome. It's really up to you to decide. There is no evidence that there is a God or gods. But equally there is no evidence to say that there aren't any gods.

It comes from the Old English word God, and another old word, Goth.

How many? None. They don't exist.

33 millions. And ONE Supreme. Krishna.
We can't be Krishna nor Shiva, but we can be Indra or Brahma. In other words, the demigods are jiva tattva, not Vishnu tattva.

About your question WIKIPEDIA is writing the below parragraph..

The earliest written form of the Germanic word God (always, in this usage, capitalized) comes from the 6th century Christian Codex Argenteus. The English word itself is derived from the Proto-Germanic * Ç¥uđan. Most linguists agree that the reconstructed Proto-Indo-European form * ǵhu-tó-m was based on the root * ǵhau(ə)-, which meant either "to call" or "to invoke". The Germanic words for God were originally neuter—applying to both genders—but during the process of the Christianization of the Germanic peoples from their indigenous Germanic paganism, the word became a masculine syntactic form.

In the English language, the capitalized form of God continues to represent a distinction between monotheistic "God" and "gods" in polytheism. The English word "God" and its counterparts in other languages are normally used for any and all conceptions and, in spite of significant differences between religions, the term remains an English translation common to all. The same holds for Hebrew El, but in Judaism, God is also given a proper name, the tetragrammaton (written YHWH), in origin the name of an Edomite or Midianite deity, Yahweh. In many translations of the Bible, when the word "LORD" is in all capitals, it signifies that the word represents the tetragrammaton. Allāh (Arabic: الله‎ allāh) is the Arabic term with no plural or gender used by Muslims and Arabic speaking Christians and Jews meaning "The God" (with a capital G), while "ʾilāh" (Arabic: إله‎ ellāh) is the term used for a deity or a god in general. God may also be given a proper name in monotheistic currents of Hinduism which emphasize the personal nature of God, with early references to his name as Krishna-Vasudeva in Bhagavata or later Vishnu and Hari.

There is only one God. He is all loving, all knowing, all forgiving. Fool yourself and you are doomed. Believe in Him and you are saved.
