A beam of light has a wavelength of 670nm in vacuum.

What is the speed of this light in a liquid whose index of refraction at this wavelength is 1.49?

Use 3.00×10^8 m/s for the speed of light in a vacuum.

v =? m/s

What is the wavelength of these waves in the liquid?

Refractive index n = speed in vacuum/speed in medium
hence, 1.49 = 3x10^8/speed in liquid
speed in liquid = 3x10^8/1.49 m/s = 2.013 x 10^8 m/s

Frequency of light in vacuum = 3x10^8/670x10^-9 Hz
Wavelength in liquid = 2.013x10^8/(3x10^8/670x10^-9) m = 450 nm
