1.
Let x be the shorter wire length, 53 - x be the longer wire length.
x/4 + 6 = (53 - x)/3
3x + 72 = 212 - 4x
7x = 140
x = 20
The length of the longer wire = 50 - 20 = 33 cm
The length of the shorter wire = 20 cm

2.
Let x be the price of each stamp after the price increase.
(60 - 12)x = 60(x - 0.3)
48x = 60x - 18
12x = 18
x = 1.5
The price of each stamp after the price increase = $1.5

Method 2 of question 1) :
(One unknown method)

Let the longer wire = x cm , then the shorter wire = 53 - x cm.

The length of each side of the square is 6cm shorter than that of the triangle :

x/3 - (53 - x)/4 = 6
( 4x - 3(53 - x) ) / 12 = 6
4x - 159 + 3x = 72
7x = 231
x = 33

The longer wire = 33 cm
The shorter wire = 53 - 33 = 20 cm.
