"was planning" 為一組動詞，有些Grammar 書甚至會說這句中的 planning 亦是動詞，但大多數都會將 was planning 為一組動詞的，所以這句的 "infinitive to" 跟随在第一組動詞後面及在笫二個動詞 retire 之前，亦屬正確的。例句你會更清楚：I am planning to go hiking this weekend. He was planning to see movie.
