A Jaguar XK8 convertible has an eight-cylinder engine. At the beginning of its compression stroke, one of the cylinders contains 499 cm^(3) of air at atmospheric pressure (1.01*10^(5) Pa) and a temperature of 27.0 oC. At the end of the stroke, the air has been compressed to a volume of 46.2 cm^(3) and the gauge pressure has increased to 2.72*10^(6) Pa. Compute the final temperature.

The correct answer is 503 oC. I want to know the approach. Thx.

Use the ideal gas equation: (P1).(V1)/T1 = (P2).(V2)/T2
where the P, V and T denote the pressure, volume and absolute temperature of a given mass of gas respectively.

Mow, given:
P1 = 1.01 x 10^5 Pa
V1 = 499 cm^2
T1 = (273+27) K = 300 K
P2 = (2.72x10^6 + 1.01x10^5) Pa = 2.82 x 10^6 Pa
V2 = 46.2 cm^3

Hence, [(1.05x10^5) x 499]/300 = [(2.82x10^6) x 46.2]/T2
T2 = 776 K = (776 - 273)'C = 503'C

Assume the working substance is ideal gas.

Equation of state for ideal gas:
P V = (mol) R T

P1 V1/T1 = P2 V2/T2
