Why Is Nightcore So Popular?

I find it weird that Nightcore is so popular, and why it is labeled "Nightcore". I mean I dont understand how people get all angry when someone chipmunks a song, but yet someone can do the exact same thing, slap a random anime picture on there, and title it "Nightcore" and BAM! Its a hit! O_O Can someone please explain what Nightcore music is? -__-
