Sunday is considered a weekend because in most European countries, the week begins on Monday and ends on Sunday. (In addition, there are some countries that begin their week on Saturday, and end on Friday.)

This is why the standard 3-day weekend is considered to be Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

For most Christians, Sunday is observed as a day for worship of God and rest, due to the belief that it is Lord's Day, the day of Christ's resurrection.
