I know I can use olive oil to treat an ear infection in cats but can I use sunflower oil instead? I don't have any olive but I do have sunflower. I have found this site >> http://voices.yahoo.com/cat-ear-infection-home-remedies-4615011.html which gives home remedies for treating an ear infection in cats and says if an infection hasn't cleared within 2 weeks to take the cat to the vets. I noticed a smell in his ear yesterday and an increase in itching the day before, I don't want him to suffer it too long and there's usually a few days/weeks wait in our local vets (depending on time of the year and such) so does anyone know if I can use sunflower oil to treat it instead of olive oil?

Oils are somewhat useful for smothering ear mites, but will do absolutely nothing for a bacterial or yeast infection. That needs an antibiotic/anti-fungal prescription drop - from the vet. The problem with many internet sites is that they don't necessarily give you good or reliable information. Olive oil plain and simply cannot kill bacteria. Call and make an appointment at the vet, rather than wasting time with "home remedies" that are not going to work for you.

J.C. is correct. by using these oils, it's just putting off treatment that will cause severe ear infections that get more difficult to treat. My cat had ear mites, and an ear infection. I did not put it off but still it took a few doses of different meds before she was cured.

Hi, I suggest that u take ur cat to the vet. ear infection can cause many health problems , im sure this is the last thing u want to happen to ur pet ! Olive oil may remove the infection for awhile but believe me it will come back again . ur cat needs antibiotic eardrops to kill all the bicitra that cause the infection
