The best way to backup is to "isolate" your operaqting system from your data.
To do this requires thinking ahead a little when installing an operating system
and programs
You start by either putting your OS on a smaller (120-160gb) HDD and installing
your DATA on another drive.
Failing this you put your OS on a 120-160gb PARTITION on a larger drive then keep
your data on another partition or drive.
That is the first step.
The second step is either CLONE your OS hard drive to another identical drive
and make a fresh clone once a month, then swap the clone in to accomplish
several things at once., the first is you verify the clone by running the computer on it.
using two drives that you seap back and forth once a month the drives will wear out
at a far slower rate.... and lastly you have backed up your computer.
If you are using a large drive with a small OS partition it tends to be a bit more complicated.
You will need to use a cloning program to create a whole system image, generally this works
by using the software to create a image of the partition.
Tho restore this image will require using the cloning software to "Restore the image", but that does not always result in something that will start your computer, because the image generally does not include a "Bootldr", however if you have an OS installation disc you connect the drive with the mounted image, and set the computer to start from the CD/DVD drive and start it with the OS
installer disc in the drive.
Run through the process of installing the windows will eventually bring you to a page where you will be given the choice of "repair Windows" rather than "install Windows". THIS will create anew bootldr and generally make that mounted image bootable.
