關於英文of 的疑問及用法

1.Check your understanding of the words in bold.
我的疑問是:為什麼不用直接說understanding the words in bold.反而要加上of 呢?

understanding是動名詞也是名詞, 在本句的語意上作為名詞較為順暢, 意思等同comprehension, recognition或realization, 與另一名詞the words之間要加介系詞of.

翻譯: 檢視你對這些粗體字話語的理解程度.

如果沒有of, 雖也合文法, 但意思是「檢視你領悟粗體字話語一事」, 語意有點無厘頭.


2.They see the display of the stock that is for sale.疑問同上一個例句一樣。

the display與the stock 都是名詞, 中間加of是必須的, 本句較無疑問, 少了of明顯錯誤.

翻譯: 他們參觀作為銷售的庫存品展示.

這是可以的, 也正是動名詞的基本功能.

動名詞片語"your understanding the words in bold"是一件事, 作為Check的受詞, 文法沒問題, 只是有點拗口; 一般會用名詞子句較為順口:
Check how well you understand the words in bold.

該片語也可當主詞:
Your understanding the words in bold will help (to) clarify the fact.

1.Check your understanding the words in bold.關鍵在於understanding 不得同時當Check受詞又兼當words的動詞。這種特性只有發生在關係副詞可以The house where(=in which) he lives is very new.請注意where用法
2.Check on understanding the words in bold is important.(OK)可以找到understanding邏輯主詞如you等省略----------

"understanding"及"display"在句中是名詞而非動詞，當然要用"of"來連接。
