basically, it very depends on the ethnicity of your students,
for locals,i think the comprehensive and routine drilling and all aspects of the
english would be preferable

for international school students, probably not local, the focus should be more on reading and written english, speaking and listening would demand much attention since they are speaking and listensing to the language in school anyway

i would recommend you to use available teaching materials, such as english grammar exercises books, public exam and school past papers, also you can try to make up essay topics for them to write up, but you will have to review and give
comments to their work (seems time-consuming to me), i usually urge my
students to find some hobbies that can be conducted thru english, like watching english tv drama/films, surfing forums in english, or reading english books/newspaper/print media (but i assume very little kids nowadays enjoy reading things on pieces of paper)

Just wonder how your student is able to get admission from the School, most International School don't teach grammar, same as USA, Canada, Australia...etc. their grade School allow the students make mistake, they look at the concepts of their writing, they learn grammar from reading the books, speaking the language, Don't get me wrong, they do teach the grammar, but not like Hong Kong, becasue these are their mother tongue, they will learn from talking day by day, unless thier parents are from none English speaking family. I would say your student is from none English speaking family. All your student needed is read more English book, read and write you a report from what he/she has had read. He or She will improve after reading more books. In USA, for example, they require the student read 3 to 4 books a week, and write up a report of their thinking or opinion that they leart from the book. You can only touch of basic grammar, don't go into too difficult, casuse you will confuse the beginner, watch TV (English) is one of the method, TV News is good too, easy to understand and the News reporter always use formal English.
