the volume, V, of a container varies jointly as its height, H and the square of the radius of its base, R.
When V= 1722 cm3, R = 10 cm and H = 16.4 cm.
a) Find an equation for the volume V in term of H and R
b) What is the percentage change in V when both the radium and the height are halved?

a) V = k * R^2 * H (in this case, k equals pi)

b) original volume ___ V = k * R^2 * H

new volume ___ V = k * (R/2)^2 * (H/2) = k * (R^2 / 4) * (H / 2) = (k * R^2 * H) / 8

the new volume is 1/8 of the original ___ this is a reduction of 7/8, or a change of -87.5%
