A ball moves in a straight line (the x-axis). The graph in the figure (Figure 1) shows this ball's velocity as a function of time.

Suppose that the ball moved in such a way that the graph segment after 2.0s
was -3.0m/s instead of +3.0m/s . Find the ball's average speed during the first
2.6s in this case.

Distance travelled in the first 2 s
= 2 x 2 m = 4 m
Distance travelled in the next 0.6 s
= 3 x 0.6 m = 1.8 m
Total distance travelled in 2.6 s
= (4 + 1.8) m
= 5.8 m
Hence, average speed = 5.8/2.6 m/s = 2.23 m/s
