Landlord put up political sign without my consent!!!!??? HELP!!?
Is it fair that my landlord put up the worst political canidate sign (wont say who dont want to cause and argument) in my yard without my consent? I live in iowa I dont know if there is some sort of law? I dont think its fair for him to bring us into his political mess. We support the opposing canidate. Will it be alright if they are "misplaced" or will i get in some trouble? help me please i am very bothered by this!!! thanks!

Sounds lie litter to me....just clean it up
the owner of property in any state can put up a political sign...if you steal the sign you can be arrested
It's his sign, and his property. If you take it and misplace it, you're stealing.
Personally, any sign like that in any area I pay for would get "misplaced". Legally I believe they can put the sign there as it is "their" property. IMHO that type of sign is just a douche-bag way of advertising regardless of content/candidate.
As an alternative, you could get two of the opposing candidates signs and place it right on each side of the original sign, totally blocking it. That is legal >.>
Two main issues here
1) Political support is a part of free speach. That is a federal right (Constitution) so Iowa law can not preempt it. So the sign itself is legal
2) What do you rent. The entire property or just the residence. If only the latter, its his lawn and his right to hammer signs in it. If you rent the entire property EXCLUSIVELY, you can remove the sign, and return it to (and p*ss off) the land lord.
Maybe the deer can destroy that sign for you!
It is legal for any landlord to put up any signage they wish. It is illegal for you to destroy that signage. You might however relocate it? to the alley?
I don't know but I live in Iowa and if I were you I'd take it out and say, "I don't know where it went."
The landlord owns the property. Not only does he have the right to put up the sign, he has the right to prohibit you from putting up any signs.
And if you remove or damage the sign, you could face legal penalties.
It sucks, and perhaps you can get your landlord to remove the sign by asking nicely, but in the end, you may have to just deal with it until November.
You know, it's a real shame, but stuff gets vandalized all the time. If your landlord's sign got vandalized in a way that's obscene and very insulting to the politician promoted on the sign, you would probably want to take it down so people wouldn't see it and think badly of or be laughing at either the politician or your landlord. As long as you called your landlord and told him what you did and why I'm sure he would agree wholeheartedly with you.
Your landlord may ask you to call the police and report the crime, but since you are not the owner of either the property or the sign you would not be able to legally do that. Your landlord would have to go to the police station and make a police report regarding the vandalism of his sign. Since your landlord is surely a law-abiding citizen I'm sure he would understand that it's his legal responsibility to report the crime, not yours. It's a shame you didn't see or hear a single thing, but the vandalism must have occurred either when you were sleeping or at work and you didn't even notice it until after it had been done and the vandal was long gone.
Your landlord may choose to put up another sign which would also be at the mercy of anyone with an opposing political viewpoint and a can of spray paint. Eventually, he will get tired of putting up signs and disposing of the vandalized ones. Just make sure no one sees the "vandal," and if your landlord approaches you about putting up any sort of surveillance system to try and catch who is vandalizing his sign you will probably want to suggest he hide it well lest the vandal do something to destroy it. Vandals hate video surveillance.
Of course, a wise vandal would most likely be wearing a ski mask or something to obscure their features so that just in case they were seen no one would recognize them or be able to identify them. They'd probably wear gloves as well, as having spray paint all over your hands and fingernails is a good way to be suspected or even identified as a vandal by the police.
