English learning please help?

Hi there,
I've been learning English for several years.
If you ask me 'Are you a good English user?' I'd say NO!

I'm now doing my undergraduate degree in Australia. I'm trying to immerse myself in an English environment by listening to English songs, reading English books (mainly textbook lol), writing essays.
Yeh but I don't get chances to have conversations cos I just came to Australia and have too few friends. What could I possibly do to get some more local Australian friends?

What I really want to ask is that if it's possible to sound like a native speaker thru intensive studying
Or if it's possible to achieve a very high level of English proficiency (in terms of speaking) when you started learning English in your adulthood? (Cos some say It's impossible for people who did not spend their childhood using that language to achieve native or native-like proficiency.)
If it's possible, how long does it really take you to reach that level?

if you want to sound like a native speaker, you need to listen hard to the song of the language and imitate it as closely as you can.
some people are more gifted in this regard than others.
If you are determined to sound like a native speaker, I'm sure you will do well..
good luck.
maybe find some local networking sites for people to help you?

Of course it is possible to reach native speaker standard, though it is unlikely you will ever lose all traces of your accent. I know plenty of people (Italians, Germans, Danes, Spaniards, Greeks and Chinese) who immigrated to the UK and speak English to native speaker level. Typically, this takes around 8-10 years of daily living and socialising in an English-speaking environment. Some get to this level much more quickly; others never quite manage to get there. A lot depends on how much you use your English and how much you use your first language.
