WWI---Rise of nationalism
Nationalism is the desire of the people of the same race, with the same customs, habits, religion, language, etc. to gather together and form a government of their own free from foreign interference.
Russia and Germany developed Pan-Slavism and Pan-Germanism to gather all the Slavs and all the Germans respectively. At the same time, Austria and Germany were friends, while Austria and Russia were struggling for the Balkans. As a result, the relationship between Germany and Russia became worse.
WWII---Rise of totalitarianism
Totalitarianism is one kind of dictatorship, which aims at:
1)one party dictatorship
2)total control over the state
3)one single ideology in the state
4)expansionism
Italy, Germany adopted totalitarianism after WWI in order to become strong again and therefore wanted to expand its territory. As a result, conflicts occurred between Italy, Germany, Britain, France and Russia.
Economic factors:
WWI---Industrial revolution
Due to the industrial revolution in the 19th century, most European countries acquired overseas colonies. As a result, crises like the two Moroccan Crises occurred to make the relationships between the Great Powers worse.
WWII---The Great Depression
Due to over-production in the US, the Great Depression happened. The Great Depression spread to Europe and helped the rise of Nazism and Hitler, which paved the way for WWII.
