require + verb +ing

"Mr. Lee was required taking over the duty of this colleague."

The sentence is wrong in grammar. Transitive verbs when used in passive voice cannot be followed by gerund phrases.

Active voice: Someone required Mr. Lee taking over the duty of this colleague.
(obviously, it is wrong for "required" to take two objects)
Instead, the gerund phrase (noun function) has to be converted into infinitive phrase (adverb function of purpose), as "to take over the duty...".

So, the correct sentence of passive voice should be:
Mr. Lee was required to take over the duty of his colleague.

(Note: it is acceptable for the format of "require + gerund", and the gerund is the object of "require".)

而require的句型，可以是

1)V+ noun(或v-ing)，如：

The floor requires washing

2)又或者是 verb object + to-infinitive，如：

The rules also require employers to provide safety training.

3)又或者可以是 verb + that-clause，如：

The rules require that you bring only one guest to the dinner.
所以，我們看到，若用被動語氣，從２）所演變出的句型應是：subject + be + p.p + to-infinitive，如：

Bringing up children often requires you to put their needs first.

require這動詞，卻沒有subject + be + p.p + participle這用法
