can downhill ski be used for ski skating?

I am still a beginner in downhill skiing. I find that it takes quite a long time for me to 'walk' on snow and I wonder if ski skating is hard to learn.
I know there are skis specially designed for ski skating, but is it possible to use the skis that I rent from the ski resort to ski skate for short distances?

thx

Yes, I use the skating technique with my downhill skis when I am on a flat area and want to get somewhere. It's not hard to learn, just push off on one leg and glide, then the other leg. You need to push from side to side shifting your weight, that will propel you forward. Do it slowly at first, it's easy to get the hang of it.

Ski skating is done with nordic(cross country) skis. Generally speaking downhill(alpine) skis are useless for ski skating because they are too heavy.
