my car insurance co phoned me with my new quote but upon recieving the letter i find its more expencive than last year.
when i spoke to the woman on the phone i was quoted a price and thought as it was almost the same as last year i would stay with them.
now my prob is this after looking on line i find i can get it for almost £80 cheaper with another co and as i was told i hads a 14 day cooling off periord i phoned and told them i dident want to renew.
i was told as i had already agread to the price and they had isued a certificate i would have to pay a cancleation fee of £25 even though i havent taken up this new insurance.
its from the 6th oct 2012.
any help on this one please

They're quite within their rights, study the policy documentation.

I would call them back and ask for a flat (no money charged) cancellation. If you're cancelling your policy in advance of the effective date, they shouldn't charge any premiums or fees whatsoever.

Doesn't matter that they 'issued' a certificate, the certificate isn't effective yet. If the person you speak to won't waive the service fee, ask to speak with their superior(s). Better yet, send them a letter explaining that you don't believe you should be penalized for non-renewing your contract in advance of the renewal date.

Insurance companies do charge service fees for cancellation (they call it short rate), but they should only do that if the policy is cancelled a) at your request and b) before the contract expiry date.

As it's from 6th October they can't use the "we've already issued the certificate" argument. No insurance company issues certificates 5 weeks in advance of renewals.

You shouldn't have to pay any cancellation charges as there has been no time on risk. You are simply not renewing the policy. You are not cancelling.

If you were doing this within a couple of days of renewal they might have a point, but 5 weeks in advance of renewal they're taking the pi55.

Argue the point with them. Stay calm and ask to go up to the supervisor or manager if necessary.
