may +have + past participle這句法,是指著對過去事情的推測,如:

He may have been rich. (他也許過去很富有)

所以,You may have had a dog.大可以譯為:你也許有過一隻狗。(過是指過去)

至於 , You may have a dog.
則要看前後文,才可確定
若,你是徵求人家許可,而對方說"You may have a dog"
則可譯為:你可以養狗

若前後文帶出句子的意思,是你估許他可能有隻狗,則可譯為:

你也許有隻狗。
