My personal experience:
I applied my first US tourist visa (B1/B2) when i was 18 years old.
I went there twice before i could get my visa.
The first time, i bought along my parents' financial proof, the letter from my secondary school proving that I would be continue my studies after returning from US. They rejected me as they wanted my secondary school handbook and my HKCE exam certificate as well.
I bought everything in the second time and i got approved.
December is actually a good time to go as it is a lot easier to prove that you will resume school the following year.
As Gary suggested, it is always not a good idea to lie. Simply tell them you have relatives in US. I don't think that would be an obstacle for you as long as you do not intend to stay in US. If you are visiting them, tell them you are visiting them and will stay at their house. If this is the case, remember to have their address handy. They might ask for that as well.
More than that, the Consulate will also ask you which part of US are you going. You better do some research if you have not planned yet. Let's say, if you will go to California, tell them that you are going to San Francisco/L.A. coz your relatives live there. Or if you will go to New York, tell them you will be sightseeing at New York City and staying in hotel.
NEVER EVER LIE!!!
