long cranks and bad rough idle when cold?

I have been having this problem for a week now, I am in Mozambique and it is not cold around 20C in the morning, problem is my car will not start, it just cranks and after stepping accelerator i get a gas smell, changed the distributor cap because it had a crack but problem still persists, sometimes when it starts, it starts very low and i have to accelerate untill engine speed goes above 1000 then it would idle roughly until temp is at half, then it runs smooth, from the i can turn it off and on without any problem as long as the enine remains hot

by the way. its an import, Toyota chaser Tourer V with manual trans

i removed the throttle body, cleaned it out with petrol(thats all i could find to use in this **** hole place!) removed the sensor and yes it was covered with sludge, washed it clean also washed the idle sensor and problem stilll persist. What is the next setp before i blow the starter with these long cranks. Thanks for your time and support gents

Hi all Robert, i cleaned the IACV (idle air control valve and still the problem persist, can it be the cold start injector?

EZ fix. Take $20 to the local wuick lube and have them clean yoru IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE adn THROTTLE BODY. THese are the most overlooked of all engine parts, and will CAUSE o2 sensor failure and converter clogging. IT adds AIR to the injected fuel under siignals from O@ sensors and computer based on TEMP sensor readings and time. USing CHEAP oil changes is the usualy cause. WAX based engine oil decomposes into acids and sludge. THe sludge gets at the IACV and cloggs it up[ till it cannot do it's job. AUTO LESSON 305. Your "GAS" pedal is really the "AIR Pedal. YOur fott only adds AIR to the injected fuel and NOTHING MORE. The IACV adds air as required to make air/fuel mixture as close to perfect as possible (14,7:1) Use ONLY synthetic engine oil, to PREVENT saludge from ever for ming. THis will make your engine LAST three times longer and proetect the CNVERTER and other expesnvie car components. Even your TRANS will shift better. TRUST ME Have YEARS of experience withh all this stuff. Send me a gratuity THANK YOU> GOOD LUCK!!

adjust the FIC back to spec. its probably sticking, replace if no good

On a cold start the engine should idle higher then that until it warms up when things are working right. But the ECM (if it has electronic fuel injection) is not getting an input it needs to see this condition. So check to make sure the sensors (if it has them) are in working order:
1. Engine temp sensor (for the ECM)
2. Inlet air temp sensor
If the engine does not have electronic fuel injection, make sure the choke pull down is working.
A complete tune up might be needed. At least check the spark plugs and consider new spark plug wires.
One last thing- check the owners manual for how to start the car. Some cars still need to have the accelerator pushed down to the floor board once and released on a cold start. On older cars often the pedal needs to be slightly depressed when doing a cold start.

So we're guessing that you aren't getting good ignition spark during a cold start of the engine. You need to check the ignition spark with a spark tester to confirm you have an ignition spark problem to diagnose. Use a spark tester like the one shown below.
