There is a very simple answer to that. Curiosity. As humans we are continually fascinated about everything around us, and we want to know everything. In actual fact, everything we do has no real point really. People go to work, but okay for what exactly? Money to buy a house, food, and other items. There may or may not be a reason for our existence, but that is almost indefinantely out of our comprehension. Science is just a way to know things, and progress, otherwise what is the point of anything? Without science there are no definite ways of looking at the universe. The ultimate goal of science is to gain knowledge, until nothing is not known. But that will probably not happen, so it gives us a purpose, moving forward.
