1.
Let the time Chris needed to complete the race last year was x minutes.
(1-12%)x = 3×60+18 = 180+18 = 198
0.88x / 0.88 = 198 / 0.88
x = 225

2.
The latest number of red tulips was: 350×(1-16%) = 350×84% = 294
The latest number of white tulips was: 250×(1+20%) = 250×120% = 300
The latest number of all the tulips was: 294+300 = 594
The original number of all the tulips was: 350+250 = 600
Therefore, the total number of tulips decreased by: (600-594) / 600 = 6/600
= 1/100 = 1%

3.
Natalie remained: 30-5 = 25 boxes of cosmetics.
If she sold out the remaining, she would get: 180×25 = $4500
Thus, she got: (4500-3600) / 3600 = 900/3600 = 1/4 = 25%

4.
The discount percent of last year = (7200-6120) / 7200 = 1080/7200 = 3/20
= 15%
The discount percent of this year = (6400-5600) / 6400 = 800/6400 = 1/8
= 12.5%
Hence, the discount percent of last year is greater.

5.
The discount of the computer game software is: 280×20% = 56
Let the cost price is $y.
35%y = 56
0.35y = 56
0.35y / 0.35 = 56 / 0.35
y = 160
The selling price = the marked price – the discount = 280-56 = $224
The profit is: (224-160) / 160 = 2/5 = 40%

6.
Let $x be the sum of money.
5.5%x×3 = 2310
0.055x×3 = 2310
0.165x = 2310
0.165x / 0.165 = 2310 / 0.165
x = 14000

7.
Let the period of time she borrowed the money is z years.
36000×(1+3.75%z) = 45450
36000×1 + 36000×0.0375z = 45450
36000+1350z = 45450
36000+1350z-36000 = 45450-36000
1350z = 9450
1350z / 1350 = 9450/1350
z=7
