Original value of xy = 40x100 = 4000
New value of xy = x(1+8%)y(1+15%) = 40x1.08x100x1.15 = 4968
So, the percentage increase = (4968-4000)/4000x100% = 24.2%

The percentage increase in their product is:

[x(1+8%) * y(1+15%) -xy]/xy * 100%
=xy(1.08*1.15-1)/xy *100%
=24.2%

(Actually the percentage increase in their product has nothing to do with the values of x and y.).
