What do you do if you can't get on the motorway?

My mum and stepdad are having a debate. My mum said stop, and wait until you can get on. My stepdad said just go on the hard shoulder, you shouldn't stop because then you don't have the speed to get on the motorway. Then my mum said the hard shoulder is for accidents only. What do you guys say?

If you use the hard shoulder for anything other than breakdowns or emergencies then you will be committing an offence which will get you a fine and penalty points. So your stepfather certainly gave the wrong answer and should re-read the Highway Code.

Normally traffic joining a motorway has a duty to match their speed to that of traffic already on the road. Some drivers don't seem to grasp this simple principle and so they end up either barging in or having to stop.

But if the left lane of the motorway (lane 1) is blocked by queueing traffic and you genuinely can't get off the slip road then you just have to stop and wait for someone to give way to you, or the obstruction clears.
This happens a lot where I live (near the M27) at rush hours and bank holidays, and congestion often extends back up the slip roads.

Do you mean theres a traffic jam on the motorway,so you cannot get
on? If you use the hard shoulder to try and get round it you will be
commiting an offence.

If the motorway traffic is moving you indicate and merge with it. Traffic on motorway slow lane will let you join. If the motorway traffic is stationary then, obviously, you cannot join and must stop.

If there is a traffic jam going onto the motorway then you wait in the que but cannot go onto the hard shoulder as it is illegal and only for emergencies. If they mean the traffic already on it is very busy and not a space for you then you still wait until there is a space.

You have to be moving to merge with traffic. If you stop and then try to pickup speed to match oncoming traffic you are an accident waiting to happen.

Mum is right. Step dad has a casual disregard for the highway code and road traffic act.

The hard shoulder is for emergencies, so this would actually be considered as an emergency, as it would be unsafe for you to actually stop in the middle of the motorway.

You should try to keep moving and merge. If the traffic is stationary and there are no gaps, you may have to stop. You could be prosecuted for using the hard shoulder as an extra lane.

You shouldn't use the hard shoulder unless there's an emergency. Eg Your car has crashed, somebody's hit your car, there's a medical emergency in your group or if there's something wrong with your car that would be too dangerous to continue to the nearest slip road or services.

You should simply merge into the traffic as you join the motorway. If you do need to stop, you should build up speed on the hard shoulder and then attempt to join the flow of traffic. It's obviously dangerous to try to join motorway traffic if you're starting from a complete stop.

This is when you listen to your mum...mums are always right ( so I am told) it is illegal to drive along the hard shoulder unless ordered by the emergency services/directed by motorway maintenance to do so.

The traffic already on the motorway must give way to you,

continue on the hard shoulder if possible
