(a) The proportion of the capacity of water that pipe A can fill in 1 hour

= 1/x

(b) The proportion of the capacity of water that pipe B can fill in 1 hour

= 1/(x - 5)

(c) 6[1/x + 1/(x - 5)] = 1

6(x - 5) + 6x = x(x - 5)

12x - 30 = x^2 - 5x

x^2 - 17x + 30 = 0

(x - 15)(x - 2) = 0

x = 2 (rejected) or 15

So, pipe A needs 15 hours to fill the tank while pipe B only needs 10 hours.
