ASUS M5A97 AMD 970 Chipset CrossFireX Support DDR3 Socket AM3+ ATX w/ 7.1 Audio, GbLAN, USB3.0, SATA-III, RAID, 2 Gen2 PCIe, 2 PCIe X1, & 2 PCI

from cyberpowerpc.com
It gives the option for 32 gb of ram, though i'd like to put 16gb on now and then maybe add another 16 later,

I clicked the option for 2x8 ram cards, so will there be 2 extra spots to add on later?

You pretty much have it. There are usually 4 slots for RAM. If there are 4 slots and your motherboard can hold a max of 32GB of RAM, then the most efficient way to fill it would 4 8GB modules. You usually are better off building your RAM in pairs too.

So go with what you thought, 2x8GB modules would be the best for now.

The ASUS M5AA97 motherboard has 4 x DIMM slots, my friend, and can handle a maximum of 32GB, DDR3 2133(O.C.)/1866/1600/1333/1066 Hz Non-ECC, Un-buffered Memory.

32 gigs, but don't forget you'll need a 64 bit O.S.
