What can you do on a day trip to Providence, RI?

My boyfriend and I would like to go to RI for the day within the next couple of weeks. He wants to go there because of Fire and Ice, but I'm not really sure what else there is to do there. I know there's a huge mall, but I don't want to go to Providence just to go to a mall all day. I'd rather go to Newport. Any ideas for fun things to do in Providence?

Providence does not have a whole lot to offer it does have the Roger Willaims Zoo
It has firewater, which is an event is has every other weekend or so
there is some nice shopping near Brown University and some nice restaurants on Atwells St

placed on something you would be comfortable in. even with the shown fact which you opt to look solid, convenience on a sight seeing day is plenty extra important. attempt denims and an excellent t-shirt with an off-the-cuff sweater/jumper/hoodie/cardigan and then functional, comfortable shoes. that's all approximately what the hair and make up sounds like so placed extra attempt into this over outfits :)
