My homework is to write a letter to a friend-Art

Dear friend,

It’s a long time since I’ve met you, how have you been? Well, in this letter, I’d like to tell you about my art lessons. I have been doing lino printing. It is a type of printing using a lino block and printing ink; you can print as many copies as you want with the lino block. I’ll tell you in detail later in this letter.

Our teacher said we are going to make an alphabet book for kids. Each person picked a letter from the alphabet; my letter is “M”. So I need to find an animal starting with the letter m. I decided to do a mouse. I found a picture on Google and I drew it. I WAS’t happy about it at first and I have thought of changing the animal but after I shaded it I think it’s much better, so I decided to keep it. After I drew it in my art book, our teacher photocopied it and made it smaller for us then we started to colour the parts we don’t want to carve out in black. After that, we copied it onto the lino block, to do that we used carbon paper. And finally, we start carving!

To carve, we used the lino carving tools; there are the small v, the big v and the u curve. I think the u curve carving tool is the best one to use, and we also have a wooden block to stops the lino block from moving. I needed to carve out a lot because I don’t want my mouse or the background to be black, but the u curve carving tool helped me to do it faster. When I was carving, I pushed so hard that my fingers went numb and I could’t bend it. Some of the girls in my class cut their finger with the carving tools but luckily it did’t happen to me. Our teacher said it’s really dangerous and the carving tools are really sharp, so we always need to remember to keep our hands behind the carving tools and don’t carve toward ourselves.

The next thing is printing. We need to put newspaper all over the table to make sure the printing ink won’t go onto the table. Then we get some single side newspaper and put them on the side so we can use it after. We got a plastic board and we used a spatula to put the printing ink at the top. The printing ink are really sticky and if it gets on our clothes it’s real hard to wash it off Then we used a soft roller to roll the ink on the plastic board so there USN’t too much ink on the roller. When we think we have the right amount of ink, we rolled it onto our lino block. Then we get a clean single newspaper and put the lino block on. We get an A4 paper/ a colour paper and put it on top of the lino block, then the next process is burnishing.
For burnishing we needed to use a hard roller or a spoon to rub the paper. It helps by letting more ink getting onto the paper so that there Warren’t many white spot. When we are done with one printing we wrote down the edition number. The edition number is a number we wrote on the bottom left corner on every piece of printing we did. When we are finish with the printing we counted how many prints there are and write it as a fraction.

We need 3 black and white good copies and 2 colour good copies. The second one I printed wasn’t as good so I did another one. In total, I got 6 copies of it.

The last step is to colour in one of the black and white printing. I used the warm colour for the background and cold colour for the mouse. After all, I’m pretty pleased with my mouse.

Hope to see you soon!

Best wishes,
