What happens if i get into a car accident with a permit, at fault, NYS?

So i got into a car accident maybe a month ago and i was driving with only my permit. I rear ended the person in front of me because i got distracted for a split second and didnt realize the light had turned red and hit the back of the car in front of me. I had only my permit. I go to court June 1st, what should i suspect? Will my license get suspended for a prolonged period of time, or do i just get points on my license when i do get it? Also should i invest in a lawyer? My dad said the lawyers he spoke to have never dealed with such a case and "dont know what to do"

Actually even though you were holding the wheel, the person supervising you in the front seat is legally considered the driver, and is required to be close enough to take over if needed to keep you from having an accident.

If you were driving alone you were driving without a license and insurance on the vehicle may not cover under those circumstances.

If you were following the rules you will just get a ticket and fine to pay, the insurance on the vehicle will cover the damage.

I have some unanswered questions but thats ok Im just going to make an observation from what you wrote first of all relax ok? accidents happen thousands of times a day. so take it easy on yourself. Without knowing why you are going to court how can we comment on it? you know what the ticket was not us. If you were driving on the permit only that is not good and I dont know what the judge will do. on the day of court you will go a little early and look on the door for the court docket. Find your name so you know what number you will be called later. Dress respectful like you are going to church use lots of yes your honor no your honor. The judge will ask you what he wants to know. answer truthfully an honestly and go from there. its up to the judge you will be with a bunch of other people who got tickets around the same time as you so what ever happens to the ones with a similar ticket will likely happen to you
