I want to meet local friends in Australia but I am an international student. Please help?

I'm doing undergraduate degree in Australia. Almost all of my classmates in tutorial are locals.
I've been feeling so inferior because I cannot speak as good as they do.
I'm always shy and nervous to talk to them. I've tried to make friends with them.
They were so kind but we only talk in class. When class is off, everyone's gone.
I don't know how I can build up friendships with locals because my English is not good enough
and they have a different sense of humor that I sometimes just don't get it.
I really hope that I can speak fluent English before I finished my studies in Australia.

Can anyone give me some advise on this?
Thank you so much

Where are you from? Invite some people you like, both male and female to an evening at your place and serve some of your national food.
Offer to study with someone.
Find a service club,eg Rotary International or Apex and volunteer to help with their projects.
Attend a local church, synagogue, temple, mosque, whichever is relevant, and you will meet people, not only of similar background but who have mastered English.
If you play a sport, join a club.
Volunteer at a retirement village to do shopping or just sit and talk with lonely residents. They will be happy to speak correct English with you.

Sign yourself up for campus activities outside of class. Anything sports related is sure to get Australians participating. If you have the time sign yourself up for student charitable activities and social clubs. The best way to meet people is to do activities with them.

Why not approach someone before class, and say "Look, I'm new to this university and I don't get to know anyone, would you like to have a coffee with me after the tutorial?"

Or you could join one of the university clubs/ groups, such as a drama group, chocolate appreciation society, film society. Film society is always good because you get to meet people and see good films at the same time.

Talk to them.

Tell them you want to form a study group or make friends or do something... And the "do something"? Tell them you want to practice your English, go for lunch, or do an "exchange" of some sort - you son't say where you are from but let's say you are Asian find some good Asian restaurants in Chinatown or if Spanish find a Tapas bar or something so take the there and ask them to show you about local stuff...

There are lots of ways to make friends.

1. Don't feel inferior...no one is going to care.

2. Use websites like brisbaneexchange.com.au and gumtree.com.au to make friends, especially for language exchange.

3. Use websites like meetup.com to make friends.

4. join clubs and groups.

don't worry, have fun.

its always hard to make new friends, i live in sydney and i think the best thing to do would just be find a place that you can go that interests you, if you like computer games can always go to a games cafe or something.

There are Pop culture/anime conventions where you can meet lots of people. look up Supanova sydney and Smash sydney, if that interests you then can go there and meet new people.
