I want to meet local friends in Australia but I am an international student. Please help?

I'm doing undergraduate degree in Australia. Almost all of my classmates in tutorial are locals.
I've been feeling so inferior because I cannot speak as good as they do.
I'm always shy and nervous to talk to them. I've tried to make friends with them.
They were so kind but we only talk in class. When class is off, everyone's gone.
I don't know how I can build up friendships with locals because my English is not good enough
and they have a different sense of humor that I sometimes just don't get it.
I really hope that I can speak fluent English before I finished my studies in Australia.

Can anyone give me some advise on this?
Thank you so much

Well, firstly just try and improve your English ;)
And, chances are that you'll either be shunned by your Australian classmates or pitied because you are all alone. Just try and engage in friendly small talk with them. Australians do have an odd sense of humour, just laugh and agree with them even if you don't understand. Oh, and don't take any insults too seriously. It's kind of like a test to see how you react.

I just wanted to stop by and tell you that I'm smarter than you are.
