sony notebook - harddisc error

my friend gave me the Sony notebook,expensive one, but already 5 years, window vista, now the notebook hard disc error, cannot open the window, whether I put the notebook for repair or better buy a new one ?? Thank you to give advice, because I don't know how to evaluate....

5年之電腦，原則上已需要退役；估計該電腦都是壽終正寢。硬碟錯誤，在一部使用了5年之電腦，估計是硬碟之index部份損毀、甚至有可能是讀頭損毀。通常是要更換一個新硬碟；但問題是電腦還要安裝很多驅動程式，電腦才能正常操作，建議你拿回sony維修，看有甚麼建議。

In most of the cases, replace the hdd can solve your problem. a new hdd cost around $500 dollar.
But it need some technique in replacing hardware and re-installing software. The labor cost could be $500.
If you ask sony service, they will collect checking fee + parts + labor, that may much more than 1K.
