How do you add or subtract mixed numbers and reduce them to lowerst terms and the answer mixed number? Like 1 1/9 + 3 4/5 and 4 5/8 - 2 1/9???!!!

1 1/9 + 3 4/5 and 4 5/8 - 2 1/9
1 is one whole or 9/9
So 1 1/9is the same as 9/9 + 1/9which equals 10/9
3 is 3 wholes, or 15/5. (see that 15 is 3 times of 5)
3 4/5 is the same as 15/5 +4/5 which equals 19/4
1 1/9 + 3 4/5
=10/9 + 19/4
To get the common denominator for addition, you need to get a common factor. Common factor of 4 and 9 is 36. 9x4=36, 4x9=36. So the numerator has to be multiplied by the same number as the denominator.
So it will be:
10x4/9x4 + 19x9/4x9
=40/36 + 171/36 (since the denominator is now the same, the fractions can be added.)
=40+171/36
=211/36
=5 31/36

here, did you get this answer? Do you under stand?
if you have any other Questions, you can ask me!!! :)

You always want to find the lowest common denominator to solve these problems. So for 1 1/9 you need to convert this to 10/9. For 3 4/5, you need to convert it to 19/5. At this point you to make sure you have the same denominator: 10/9 + 19/5 becomes 50/45 + 135/45 = 185/45 then you have to reduce this to its lowest terms 180/45 = 4 and then you have a remainder of 5/45 which can be reduced to 1/9, so you answer for this problem is 4 1/9. The same process would be applied to all problems of the same type. Good luck!
