You are asked to find the time interval between the child leaves the ground and when he hits the ground again.

Use equation of motion: s = ut + (1/2)at^2
with s = 0 m, u = 9.81 m/s, a = -g (= -9.81 m/s^2), t =?
Hence, 0 = (9.81)t + (1/2).(-9.81)t^2
i.e. t = 2 x 9.81/9.81 s = 2 s

Therefore, the child remains in air for 2 seconds.
