Cold water has density higher than hot water.
Hence, to bave the condenser provides an effective cooling, cold water should enter the condenser at the lower inlet. When it absorbs heat from the condenser and becomes hot, and hence possesses a lower density, it rises to the top and comes out from the upper outlet.
Should the condenser be placed horizontally, the flow of less dense hot water would slow down. This certainly reduce the effectiveness of the condenser.
