It depends on what you mean by "education". If one's goal in life is simply to get a job then, depending on the society in which one lives, it is necessary to go through formal educational programs. First, the world keeps changing, and people need to not only to learn the textbook stuff but also to learn newer technology and the communication skills necessary to work with people from other cultures. Without these things it becomes more challenging to compete in the job market. There's always going to be somebody who's younger, better looking, better at playing workplace politics, and wanting the same employment opportunities that you do. Your education and experience are what give you that competitive edge. It really depends on what you want to do. If, for instance, you want to be a doctor, there's no way to get there without going to medical school.
On the other hand, many people are finding that getting a job and calling somebody else "boss" is not what they want for a future. These are more likely to be the types of people who are highly creative. They either have exceptional artistic abilities or have good ideas for building a successful business. Some of the most successful people in life fall into this category. Many are college dropouts who figured out early that college was not for them, and some never bothered to go to college at all because they knew exactly what they wanted to do and knew how they they would do it since they were kids. For these kinds of people, working 9 to 5 for somebody else will never do. These people educate and equip themselves with all that they need to know to become successful. And many of them have said that they never would have learned what they know by attending any college.
